Another great option for transporting your Birdy is to use the cardboard shipping box your bike came in. The box is more than strong enough for checking in at airports and is easy to carry. If you do not have a box, please contact your retailer. You can ask for a cardboard box when you buy your Birdy.
There are a few options to covering or protecting your Birdy for transport. They range from a something as simple as a Birdy cardboard shipping box, right up to a padded suitcase. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages. You can learn about them all on this page.
The Birdy Cover is made from nylon. It protects your Birdy from
dust and dirt and disguises it when you want to jump on a bus or train. In just a few seconds the cover can be pulled over the folded bike and securely fastened with a cord from underneath.
The cover
has a convenient gap at the top allowing you to grab hold of your
bike by the main tube for easy carrying. While you are not using the
cover, you can fold it (like a rain jacket) into a very small package.
If you have to check your Birdy in as luggage on a train or bus, then
we recommend wrapping the delicate parts of your Birdy in bubblewrap
or cardboard before placing the cover over the bike.
Please note: The cover does not offer suitable protection for transporting
your Birdy on an airplane. Remember: if they can destroy something, they will destroy something.
The Backpack Bag is an ideal partner for traveling on
trains, buses and airplanes. The bag is
large enough to hold the Birdy and some other luggage (e.g. pannier
bags). It also folds up into a small back pack that you can wear
while riding. Or when its folded up, you can easily double it into two then strap it across the top of the rear rack while touring (this works really well).
The bag is made of Cordura Plus, a strong material which gives the
bike reasonable protection against being knocked. The bag can be used for airplane travel, however we recommend including pieces
of cardboard or bubble wrap to give the more fragile parts of the bike some additional protection.
It's also possible to sew some inserts on the inside of the bag at the exact points where the folded Birdy is a bit pointy. Putting thick old socks on the bottom of the seatpost and the pedals is also a good idea.
Tip: We recommend people slide out the folding stem and lay it across the top tube when using the backpack bag. The folding stem is only held in place by a quick release lever so its easy to do. This will decrease the width of the folded bike by quite a bit. Unlike the german range of Birdys, our models in Australia have an 80mm Ahead stem and sometimes also barends as standard. As a result the width of our bikes is greater than the German range. But by sliding out the folding stem for transporting the width decreases considerably and it is then an easy task to zip up the bag. Laying the folding stem + handlebars across the top tube also has the advantage of keeping your brake levers well out of harms way. Just remember to use some bubble wrap or material between the handlebar and the top tube.
The Padded Suitcase is the next step up in options for transporting
your Birdy. It is basically the shape of a suitcase, but is
padded all around for good protection. You place the Birdy inside
and zip it up. It has wheels, a handle and a shoulder strap to make transporting a breeze.
See the Tip above about sliding out the folding stem as it applies to the Padded suitcase as well.
When not being used, the padded suitcase can be folded to a
smaller size that makes it much easier to store - but it is still relatively big. The suitcase is more suited to the traveler who has a fixed destination (like a hotel) that they are using as a base, and for people who are flying out of the same place that they landed in. It's really not possible to transport the padded suitcase on the bike so its no good for the adventurous tourer.
