Note: Full sized panniers can be fitted even though photo doesn't show this.

With up to 24 gears, full suspension and a riding position like a large wheeled bike, the Birdy makes an excellent long distance touring bike.

This page describes the racks that can be fitted to the Birdy and also what you need to fit panniers to your Birdy. All the photos on this page are hyperlinks to larger more detailed photos.

The Rear Carrier
Also known as the expedition carrier. It's ideal for attaching bags, boxes and luggage. It's also designed to take panniers - including full sized panniers. This rack folds automatically with the bike due to its canti-levered 4-point attachment system.

Rear Carrier - Specs
Loading capacity: 15kg
Carrier weight: 800g
Rail diameter: 16mm
Stock code: PC-CAR-EXP

The Front Rack
Also known as the lowrider. This rack allows you to attach panniers to the front of your Birdy. The lowrider weighs only 200g and folds easily with the bike. (Loading capacity 10kg)

Front Rack - Specs
Loading capacity: 10kg
Carrier weight: 200g
Rail diameter: 8mm
Stock code: PC-LOWRIDER

Panniers - general info
Panniers can easily be attached to the rear and front racks. Rear panniers hang from the rear carrier (PC-CAR-EXP). But to stop them bouncing into the rear wheel, you also need a lower attachment point. This is provided by using a Birdy mudguard set.

Mudguards - Specs
Front and rear : 4 pnt attachment = less noise
weight: 320g
Rail diameter rear: 8mm
Stock code: PC-FDR-485

Pannier size
Many types of panniers can be fitted to the Birdy. We recommend the Ortlieb Front Roller Plus and Back Roller Plus panniers as ideal for serious touring. They are 100% waterproof, light weight and have a brilliant attachment system (QL2). The 'roller plus' system is a little fiddlier to get in and out of, but the advantage being that the pannier is totally watertight (this also stops dust getting in). Ortlieb make other superb panniers that feature a lid type system. Of course there is a good chance that your favourite brand of panniers will fit as well. Just watch out for the 16mm rails on the rear carrier. These are quite wide and you should make sure your panniers will actually clip onto the rails.

Weight Distribution
Because small wheeled bikes have light steering compared to larger wheeled bikes, we recommend distributing some of your heavier items to the front panniers rather than the rear.
It is not recommended to heavily load the rear of the Birdy with no panniers on the front at all.

Folding
The front and rear racks do not interfere with the folding capability of the Birdy. In just a few seconds the bike and racks can be folded with almost no increase in folding size of the bike on its own.
